Our Annual Plant Sale – 2018 Edition

Our Annual Plant Sale is happening Saturday, June 2nd at its usual location at 88 Cherie Drive from 8:00 AM to Noon

This is the ideal time to find plants, grown locally, that can add that special item to your home gardens. Most reasonable prices, variety, excellent information from knowledgeable people and helping to fund the many projects the Friends of Walker’s Creek undertake in the Parks. In the past, these Plant Sales have purchased park benches, have tagged the various trees, added bushes and plants and continue to make improvements in the Parks for the enjoyment of all.

We welcome donations of potted plants from all as these form the supply that is available for sale. Donated potted plants can be dropped of at 88 Cherie Drive anytime this  coming week. Because these plants come from local gardens, you can be assured they are well climatized, have found the local climate and conditions ideal for their growth and so adding them to the garden at your home has the greatest possibility of continued growth and prosperity.

The Plant sale is also a great time to meet with the Directors of the Friends of Walker’s Creek and share your insights, make suggestions, get excellent advice on local home gardening and be an active part of maintaining and improving the Parks that are such a central delight in the Grantham and St. Georges wards.

TIME TO SPLIT AND SHARE

The Friends volunteers have just finished spring cleaning the pollination garden in Walker’s Creek Park South and now it’s time to split and share these native pollinators with our Walker’s Creek members!  Be sure to bring your own containers and we will dig up your plant selection.  Sweet Oxeye, Beardtongue, Wild Bergamot, coneflower, asters and more to be given away.  Not a member?  Not a problem!  A $10 donation and you automatically become a member.  A tax receipt will be mailed to you at year end.  Our Split and Share Event is this coming Saturday, May 26th, 8-12noon at Walker’s Creek Park South between Linwell and Parnell Rd,   The nearest entrances to the garden are Richelieu north of The Cedars or Strathcona at Keisten. Hope to see you there!

NEW TREES IN REALTY PARK

It was a perfect day for tree planting and to celebrate Earth Week!  Students from Our Lady of Fatima School arrived ready to help plant 10 new trees in Realty Park.  Each tree is different and native to our area (a part of the Carolinian Forest).  Many thanks to The Friends volunteers who came bright and early to prepare the holes for planting and to City staff for the early morning tree delivery!  Olivia Groff of Landcare Niagara introduced each tree to the students, describing how each tree will help wildlife as well as increasing the tree canopy to make a healthier place to live!  Landcare Niagara has generously donated a total of  32 Native trees in the past 3 years to parks along Walker’s Creek.  THANK YOU LANDCARE NIAGARA 32 TIMES!
