Native Plant Giveaway

It’s time  to split the native flowering plants in the Pollination Garden in Walker’s  Creek Park South.  Bring your own container and take home a native wildflower to try out in your home garden.  Some of the plants being offered are Beardtongue, Virginia Mountain Mint, Coneflower and New England Aster.  Entrance to the park is Richelieu at Old Oxford or Strathcona at Keisten.  Join The Friends and The Niagara Restoration Council between 9 and 11 am!

ADDING COLOUR TO CINDY PARK

Great job volunteers!

The Friends of Walker’s Creek have recently partnered with The City of St. Catharine Green Advisory Committee to create an entrance garden at the Lakeshore Road entrance  of Cindy Park.  The object of this project is to make the entrance to the park more appealing and encourage people to come and enjoy the park.  Once established, trail walkers will enjoy the riot of colour this new garden will bring.  The colour begins now (May) with blue salvia and continues throughout the summer with coneflower, daisy, black eyed Susan, catmint, followed in the fall with sedum and joe pye weed. The tall grass of blue stem will be left tall for winter interest.  Watch for visits from butterflies, bumble bees and other pollinators and of course the songbirds will be enjoying the seeds from these perennial beauties.  Enjoy!

Our Annual Plant Sale

Our Annual Plant Sale is happening Saturday, June 3rd at its usual location at 88 Cherie Drive from 8:00 AM to Noon

This is the ideal time to find plants, grown locally, that can add that special item to your home gardens. Most reasonable prices, variety, excellent information from knowledgeable people and helping to fund the many projects the Friends of Walker’s Creek undertake in the Parks. In the past, these Plant Sales have purchased park benches, have tagged the various trees, added bushes and plants and continue to make improvements in the Parks for the enjoyment of all.

We welcome donations of potted plants from all as these form the supply that is available for sale. Donated potted plants can be dropped of at 88 Cherie Drive anytime this  coming week. Because these plants come from local gardens, you can be assured they are well climatized, have found the local climate and conditions ideal for their growth and so adding them to the garden at your home has the greatest possibility of continued growth and prosperity.

The Plant sale is also a great time to meet with the Directors of the Friends of Walker’s Creek and share your insights, make suggestions, get excellent advice on local home gardening and be an active part of maintaining and improving the Parks that are such a central delight in the Grantham and St. Georges wards.
