2022….a year in review

The first week in May volunteers gathered at the pollinator garden in Walker’s Creek Park South to clear the winter debris in preparation for the annual “Split and Share”. This is a popular event with the neighbourhood gardeners who are interested in creating or expanding their backyard gardens to encourage wildlife visitors as well as enjoying the added colour themselves.

In June another successful Plant Sale at 88 Cherie Rd with plants generously donated by the Walker’s Creek members brought in $400 plus which is used for planting and garden maintenance in the parks along the trail as well as stationary, etc.

In September “An Evening of Stargazing” with the Royal Astronomical Society Niagara was held in Cindy Park. The weather was perfect which encouraged a good turnout of all ages.

Late September students from Niagara College met with our volunteers and planted over 350 wildflowers throughout the reforest restoration project completed in 2021 located on the bluff of Cherie Park. The plants were generously gifted from The Friends of Malcolmson Eco Park. The following week volunteers from Walker’s Creek and the NPCA planted a new pollinator garden just north of the children’s playground in Cindy Park. Many thanks to the NPCA and the City for their assistance.

In early October, Cindy Park was the site of a mass planting of trees and shrubs. With the loss of a forested area on private property on the west side of Cindy Park, the city decided to use a generous donation from Trees Canada to replace the loss of wildlife habitat directly beside the new proposed development. This will act as a buffer between the new development that will be appreciated by us humans as well as the wildlife who call Cindy Pk home!

I am so thankful to our Walker’s Creek members and volunteers, to the City of St. Catharines staff and Councillors Dawn Dodge and Bill Phillips, the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority, the students at Niagara College and our Friends of Malcolmson Eco Park. Working together we accomplish so much!

With Sincere Thanks,
