So, what has the WCNA done?
Since September 2002, we have…
- Won the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority’s “Group of the Year” Award of Merit for our environmental teamwork
- Worked with City Council to get 2 new City playgrounds installed – north & south of Parnell
- Successfully petitioned City Council to change the existing zoning of 4 of our creekside parks from “Housing” to “Environmental Protection Area”
- Awarded $8,500 in environmental grants …brought various agencies together for environmental projects, helping to reduce creek erosion & polluted run off from our yards, creating a habitat for fish & wildlife
- Requested barriers to block the unauthorized vehi cle access that endangered our park users
- Worked with the Niagara Regional Police to have bike patrols & plain-clothes police patrols through our parks in 2003 & 2004
- Hosted 2 “Party in the Park” celebrations in the park for 500 local residents with delicious food, cool drinks and free inflatables
- Hosted 3 public “Star Gazing Nights” with the Royal Astronomical Society of Niagara with FREE telescope viewing of stars, planets, moon
- Assisted a local family of 5 who lost everything in a fire
- Publish regular issues of our newsletter, the Walker’s Creek News, delivered to up to 2,000 homes & businesses in Grantham Ward
- Host annual Yard Tours in the neighbourhood – this popular event is our main fundraising event
- Planted 2 Butterfly gardens in Cherie Road Park and Walker’s Creek Park North
- Established a popular neighbourhood website. Check it out at www.walkerscreek.ca
- Hosted All Candidates Nights for Grantham Ward with the St. Catharines Firefighters’ Association
